Week Five: Mappings

Image
Today our group presented our mapping of the PO3 area. Earlier in the week, our group discussed how we would split up the work, we agreed that; Laura (me): produce the maps Naahzat: Pheonix building research Archana: Merlin Park research Calvina: Hilsea Lines research Sophie: Presenting to class Nasreen: Research on PO3 area Emily: Researching green spaces I decided to use Digimaps as a starting point for the maps, using photoshop, I produced four different maps of the PO3 area showing the empty buildings, surrounding demographics, main roads and train routes, and green spaces;  I decided to do the maps this way as it made it easier for the group to work with them, as well as it made the maps easier to read and understand. I unfortunately was unable to attend todays presentation, but from discussing with my group, it was successful and all went well. (All map drawings made by me.)

Working into the Idea of Snapshots

Image
I decided to further experiment with the fence and the idea of snapshots. I did this by using photoshop to experiment with my previous photos of Portsmouth showing different atmospheres.   I found that this is a really fun and abstract way to present the photos, as well as a playful way to start developing my project.

Week Four: EPC Workshop

Today was the EPC workshop. I initially started by playing with my objects as well as some recycling I brought in to use. I ended up with using the recycling by pushing and bending it into the bird feeder and the fencing. I found that the bird feeder full of recycling made a powerful image; representing how as a society we tend to forget our impact on the environment as well as the impact on the animals we share it with. The bird feeder also reminded me of the art installation on Portsmouth beach of the Treadgold fish sculpture that is full of plastic. It is an installation showing how much plastic people throw away, and to encourage people to recycle and reduce waste.  Turning my focus back to the module, I found that I had created an interesting narrative of the importance of recycling, as well as a narrative of a 'glimpse into the past / future' and the idea of former glory vs. reality with objects. I decided to further explore these narratives;  At this point, I had surre...

Week Three: Colour Workshop

Image
Today was the colour workshop, we started off by moving all the tables and laying out our sheets and discussing why we chose the colours we used, and if it was successful or not. We then played with the sheets and laid them out in different ways, playing with the colours, how the colours complemented and contrasted with other colours. We then cut our sheets into thirds and formed groups to work together in presenting the colours around the studio. We further played with how colour engages with the space, materials, and people;  Our group decided to start extending our sheets up to the ceiling and using furniture around us to make a stage-like space, presenting the sheets in a more abstract way and how the colours complement and contrasts the surrounding space.  (All photos taken by me.)

Week Two

After todays collaborative writing / drawing workshop, we were asked to find objects/ materials for the EPC workshop. I found two shelves, a broken bird feeder, and some broken wooden fencing.  I'm a little nervous in terms of using these objects for the workshop as they're very random, but I am looking forward to experimenting with them. In preparation for the colour workshop, I have painted two A1 pages, one purple as it is my favourite colour, and the other a dark green that resembles my jewellery box that is a crushed velvet dark green. For week 5, myself and others have made a group chat for our group members to join so we can discuss the mapping activity and how we plan to split up the work.  (All photos taken by me.)
