Week Four: EPC Workshop

Today was the EPC workshop. I initially started by playing with my objects as well as some recycling I brought in to use. I ended up with using the recycling by pushing and bending it into the bird feeder and the fencing. I found that the bird feeder full of recycling made a powerful image; representing how as a society we tend to forget our impact on the environment as well as the impact on the animals we share it with.

The bird feeder also reminded me of the art installation on Portsmouth beach of the Treadgold fish sculpture that is full of plastic. It is an installation showing how much plastic people throw away, and to encourage people to recycle and reduce waste.

Turning my focus back to the module, I found that I had created an interesting narrative of the importance of recycling, as well as a narrative of a 'glimpse into the past / future' and the idea of former glory vs. reality with objects. I decided to further explore these narratives;

At this point, I had surrendered my recycling to other students in the workshop for them to use, so I was left with my original objects. So I decided to experiment with lighting and shadows;

I found that the fencing could stretch and fold up a lot further than I thought, it created very interesting shadows. I also found that if you held up the fencing and looked through it, it created 'snapshot' like sections of the surroundings, I decided to further experiment with this outside of the workshop;

I really enjoyed playing and experimenting with this idea of a 'snapshot' with the fence. It ties in very well with the narrative of a 'glimpse into the past / future' and is very thought provoking with where I could take my project to.
