Kinetic and Movement Art and Artists

Following on from my exploration of ideas, I have decided to do some research into different kinetic / movement art and artists;

Heather Hansen

Heather Hansen is a performative and visual artist known for her kinetic drawings. She has performed and exhibited in major cities throughout Asia, Europe and America. Her kinetic drawing series is a hybrid of dance, film, and visual art. It utilises the body as a drawing tool to transcribe movement to canvas. Heather Hansen's background in dance has allowed her to develop an awareness of the patterns created in the negative space around the body in motion. (1) Her desire to understand and bring these forms into a tangible physical manifestation is shown through her exploration through different materials and techniques. Heather Hansen's performative drawings are stripped down to raw process; propelled by gesture, body geometry, and leverage her drawings show organic patterns, holding her audiences in meditative engagement. (1)

I absolutely love Heather Hansen's performance drawings, I find her work to be very captivating. I have previously studied Heather Hansen's work, and I have always enjoyed producing my own drawings inspired by hers, I found that depending on the location, surrounding sounds, and emotions will have an impact on the final drawing. I think that this style of performative drawings will be interesting to explore in Wymering Manor.

Trisha Brown

Trisha Brown was an American choreographer and dancer, and one of the founders of the Judson Dance Theatre and the postmodern dance movement. (3) She experiments with space, gravity, and the inversion of the body’s hierarchies. Similar to Heather Hansen, (one could argue that Hansen took inspiration from Brown) Trisha Brown uses charcoal to produce large performative drawings using her whole body, merging movement and mark-making.

Unlike Heather Hansen, Tisha Brown's movements during her performance drawings are less repetitive and more improvised, resulting in a much softer, less geometrical drawings, but still successfully captivating her movements into the paper. I think that this style of performative drawings will be interesting to explore in Wymering Manor.

Suna Imre

Before moving into ceramics, Suna Imre trained and worked for 15 years creating dance installation, performance and film. Specialising in improvisation, her work is rooted in spontaneous composition; her work continuously unfolding into the present moment. (2) She is inspired by nature, particularly bird songs, she often goes into forests and sits listening to birds and her surroundings markmaking using ink and paper, which she uses on her ceramics.

I find Suna Imre's markmaking really inspiring as its quite unconventional and a very interesting way to present a sense (sound) and an experience. I think it would be interesting to experiment with this at the Manor to document my own experiences.

  1. Have a look at the work of artists from the 60s and 70s in New York as Trisha Brown. Also speak with Holly Fender as she's been working on performative drawings for her project. (making drawings in her home). Sovan has been making large drawings too.
